Why Go to Botswana for African Safari?

  • by

Botswana vacation packages offer a traditional safari experience in one Africa’s top destinations. Botswana’s iconic Okavango Delta is located in the center of Botswana’s safari destinations. The Okavango Delta is flanked to the east by the rolling Savuti savannah, and the Chobe’s elephant paradise.
The Makgadikgadi saltpans are far south of the delta, as well as the Kalahari semi-desert prairies. Botswana’s famous wildlife can be explored on horseback or on guided game drives. Chobe is Africa’s largest population of elephants. There are also large herds of buffalo, Zebra and other antelope species. Botswana’s plains game has many of Africa’s most important predators like lions leopards, hyenas as well rare wild dogs. Even bird watching is extraordinary.

You can enjoy unique experiences in the Kalahari scrubland and saltpans south of the delta, including quad biking safaris and cultural encounters with the San, Africa’s first people. Botswana’s green season migration occurs here, usually between January-March depending on the seasonal rainfall. After the summer rains have dried the desert waterholes, thousands upon thousands of antelope and zebra migrate to the area to enjoy the sweet, new grasses. The resident lion prides then make the most out of visiting herds and this creates dramatic predator-prey interactions.

The planning of your Botswana vacation can be made easy by our African Safari Experts. The safari packages and tours offered range from luxurious luxury safaris to adventurous adventure, specialist safaris that cater for keen photographers, and intimate honeymoons. Although it’s an excellent destination for multigenerational family vacations we do not recommend it to young children or toddlers.

Botswana: Where to go

Botswana has a lot to offer. Large wetlands and rivers provide habitats for biodiversity, while the Kalahari is a great place to go for sun-baked saltpans and game-covered grasslands. Each destination is unique, but you can combine them all by chartering light aircraft to take you there. You can even view bird’s eyes while on your way.

Okavango Delta – The Kalahari’s green oasis

The Okavango Delta, a lush green paradise nestled in the middle of the Kalahari red, is the focal point of many Botswana safaris. It is one the most stunning natural destinations in the world. With its labyrinthine canals, open floodplains, and tangled woods, it truly does teem full of wildlife. There are many Botswana safari activities available, including game drives, nature walks and canoe trips. Many of the Okavango Delta’s natural beauty is protected by the Moremi Game Reserve. However, many of the remaining areas are managed privately by conservation concessions.

Botswana: Best Time to Visit

It is easy to answer the question about when you should visit Botswana by focusing on what you want to do. When the dry months between May and October are dry, game viewing is at its best. Animals gather at water sources in increasing numbers as the dry season goes on. Experts believe that the cooler months from June to August are the best time for Botswana safaris. The game viewing is excellent, there is virtually no rain, and the risk of malaria is lowest.

Peak wildlife concentrations are reached during the warm and dry September/October months. Wildlife tends not to disperse during rainy January-April summer. However, Chobe’s Savute area and the Kalahari offer excellent game viewing during summer, due to their proximity to migrating animals (especially zebra). Botswana’s three Kalahari parks, in Botswana, are best in the early summer. This is because there are many antelope that give birth during December which means more predators.

Botswana is a great destination for birders all year. However, the “Green Season”, which sees a lot of migrants during the summer months, is the best time to visit Botswana. It offers both the diversity and the numbers of bird species.
