What type of boiler is best?
It helps to be able to determine which type of boiler is best for you. What boiler power is required to heat your house and provide hot water to your family? What warranty is required by the boiler manufacturer?
Locate
Boilers can be found almost anywhere, provided that they have the clearances needed to be removed for servicing or repaired.
Manufacturers may refuse to repair it if they don’t meet the clearances.
Remember that combi boilers will require five copper pipes and one pipe of plastic to enter the boiler’s bottom. If you have a regular boiler, then you will need only 3 copper pipes.
Be aware of the noise. Although most modern homes are quieter, it’s worth thinking about. We are often called upon to move boilers out of bedrooms to kitchens, garages or lofts.
Your boilers heat
The last thing to think about is your boiler flue. The flue comes out the top of your boiler. It can go outside either vertically through holes in the walls (a vertical or horizontal flue) or horizontally upwards and out of your roof.
The work involved is slightly more, and may include ladders depending on how high the building (i.e. If you live in a townhouse, scaffolding might be required.
Your flue emits a smoke-like plume from its terminal. This means that the terminal must not be more than 30 cm from a window or door. If it is unavoidable, a plume kits can be used to safely divert the fumes.
Gas pipe
A small gas pipe can cause a boiler to not work properly and may even be unsafe. Your boiler should have a 22mm length of gas pipe from your gas meter.
A 28mm pipe is required for any boiler with a power output greater than 36kw. Gas pipes can often be upgraded so ask your installer. New installations are often plugged in to old 15mm pipe.
Pipe clips
You should make sure that your gas pipes are trimmed every 1mt to avoid any noises.
Condensate & drainage pipe
The pipe that runs to drains, internal or external.
It should be located inside the waste traps. To prevent freezing, the outside diameter should be 32mm.
Another option is to use an external pump or soakaway (buried into soil). If you’re not using a boiler, then the pipe MUST slope away from it. If the pipe does not, condensate could back up into your boiler and damage the main heat. Externally, the slope will reduce the chance of freezing.
Flushing/filter
If you don’t flush your boiler before replacing it, the boiler will be attached to an old central heating unit that has likely been collecting dirt and debris for many years. Any corrosion or sludge built up over the years can travel right through your new boiler, clogging it up.
Manufacturers cannot replace parts that are sludge-damaged under warranty.
You can also get boiler coverage if you already have one. Your boiler insurance will cover only damage and defects caused by central heating debris or sludge.
Finally, make sure that your return pipe has a good filter. Your boiler filter will not only collect the sludge but also stop it from entering your boiler.
Documents
Installer will then commission your boiler. It is important that they register your warranty immediately.
Gas Safe registration must be completed by the installer. This certificate will be required if you want to sell your house.
