How to undertake tree stump removal

Tree stump removal Harlow can seem daunting, even though it may not seem like an easy task. Here are six methods to remove a stump from a tree:

Stump Grinding

A stump grinder service is a great way to save time and money. Although it may be more expensive, the job can be done faster. If you have several stumps to be removed and have the necessary training and knowledge, renting a stump grinder is an option.

Pulling or winching

You can also pull smaller stumps out of trees using a winch. They can be hired, but you will need to have the necessary knowledge and training. It is better to leave a good-sized stump stub (up to 1.2m (4ft high)) for leverage than to cut it at ground level.

Chainsaw

A chainsaw is all you need to remove a stump from a tree. Simply dig around the stump and cut it as low down as possible. Cut criss-cross cuts into the stump, 4-6 inches below the ground. This can damage your chain or cause it to break. It won’t remove the stump completely.

Grubbing out

Although it is labor-intensive, removing a stump from a tree can be done by hand. You can remove the stump manually by simply removing the soil around it and exposing the larger tree roots.

Depending on how large the roots are, you will need to use loppers or a prybar and/or a handheld saw to cut them into smaller pieces. Then, pull out what you can from the ground and remove as much root system as possible.

Once you have cut as many roots as possible, the stump should be easy to remove. The spade may be necessary to dig under the stump to remove some roots. Once the stump is removed, it can be cut up and added to your compost pile. While some roots may be left in place, the majority of them should eventually die.

It makes sense to use a mini-excavator if you have one.

Burning

As stumps are often too wet to burn in situ, it is not recommended that they be burned. You should also consider the time and safety of burning it.

A fire pit is a great way to have fun and be practical. You can make a campfire by placing rocks around the stump. The stump will continue to burn until it is gone each time you light a fire.

A burn barrel is the best choice if you want to use the most safest method of burning. Simply take a metal drum, and make a hole at the top, sides and bottom. You can place it upside down on the stump. Add firewood to the barrel and let it burn.

Rotting

You could also leave the stump untreated and bury it in compost for a few years. The stump should eventually become sufficiently broken down that you can then remove it using an axe or spade.
