Going to university – what are my accommodation options?

  • by

There are many options for accommodation in Leicester, which is one of the benefits of being a student. Since I started university, I have seen the variety of factors that go into deciding where to stay. Here are some things I recommend you consider.

1. Consider your budget. I set a monthly maximum amount that I was willing to spend on accommodation, and also set a lower limit. It is helpful to know how much you can afford for accommodation and weigh up the options. For example, if you’re happy to stay in a shared space, you might consider getting a twin room as a way to save some money or if you don’t mind walking a bit more (or getting on public transport/cycling…) to campus, then perhaps your trade-off might be staying in accommodation which is a bit further away.

2. Consider the distance. This was an important factor for me as I wanted to be able to walk to certain places that I knew I would visit often. You might also think about the location of a Leicester student studio. Do you prefer to be closer to train stations, for instance? This is a great way to narrow down your options for accommodation if you are looking to be closer to campus or other facilities.

3. Consider the social scene. As a first-year student I was very conscious of this and decided to move somewhere that was social enough for me. Others might prefer living in a community where everyone is more independent. You should also consider the size and number of students staying in the accommodation. This will impact the social experience.

4. Take into account the amenities. Different accommodation types offer different advantages, so ranking your preferred amenities is a personal decision. Self-catering halls or room options are the best option if you want to be able to prepare all or most meals. However, I was looking for a hall that provided dinner on most days. Some halls may have an ensuite room or a shared kitchen, but I was primarily looking for accommodation that would allow me to cook.

5. You can choose your preferred accommodation type – As I mentioned, there are many options for students in Leicester. There are many options for accommodation. These include inter-collegiate halls that allow you to make friends with people from different universities, or private accommodations. You will have more time to research the options and weigh all factors. This will help you find the right space for you.

We wish everyone who is actively searching for accommodation the best of luck!
