The UK’s stricter regulations for aesthetic injectables practitioners mean that it is now safer and more convenient to have a semi-permanent tweakment or two. If you find botox or fillers intimidating, Profhilo may be the right choice for you.
Profhilo is a skin moisturizer that has been dubbed the ultimate glow-giver by its fans. Profhilo provides deep hydration to your skin, helping it plump, moisturize and give you an all-round glow.
What is it exactly? What is it? And how much does that hurt? Two of the most respected experts in the beauty industry, Dr Wassim Taktouk (Aesthetic Dermatologist) and Dr Stefanie Williams (Chemical Dermatologist), gave us the scoop on Profhilo.
Everything You Need to Know About Profhilo
What is Profhilo?
Dr Williams explains that Profhilo(r), a moisturising treatment that ‘beneath skin’ hyaluronic acids (HA) penetrates deeper than any topical serum. Dr Taktouk explains that it contains 62mg of pure hyaluronic acids per 2ml syringe. It targets multiple layers of skin to restore firmness and tone, as well as elasticity. This is a level that cannot be achieved by applying skincare products directly onto the skin’s surface.
How does Profhilo compare with other injectables
Although Profhilo might be considered an injectable, it is not the same as botox and fillers. Profhilo Newcastle, however, is a completely new treatment.
Dr Williams says Profhilo is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that can be used to restructure the skin. It’s not like dermal fillers and wrinkle-relaxing Botox which increase volume/contour or relax facial muscles. Profhilo, in this sense, is totally different to fillers and botox. It should not be considered a replacement but an addition. It can also be used as a starter option for skin less mature than that which requires other cosmetic injectables. Because the results are natural-looking, it’s extremely popular.

What does Profhilo do?
How does Profhilo work? Dr Williams explains that Profhilo(r), when injected into the skin, helps to retain water and “moisturise” the skin from the inside. Dr Williams also stated that Profhilo(r) has been shown to stimulate collagen and elastin. Stabilised HA products will have a longer lasting effect on the skin than non-stabilised HA products, such as mesotherapy.
What are the skin benefits of Profhilo?
Botox and fillers can alter the shape or movement of your face, but Profhilo is the final step in your skincare regimen. Dr Taktouk explains that Profhilo’s results are achieved through its multiple levels of action. It creates structure and support at deeper levels, as well as hydration that gives skin its bounce back and plumpness. We see a healthier complexion and a better texture on the surface.
Talk to us about what happens…
There are obviously some needles involved. But how many and where exactly? Dr Taktouk guided us through the process of a Profhilo appointment…
1.Consultation
“In our clinic we consult with patients first to make sure they are suitable for treatment. We talk about the possible side effects of Profhilo and the benefits that each patient might experience. Our discussions are often complemented by written information. We also offer patients a follow-up appointment for the actual treatment. This “cool down period” is encouraged for new patients to allow them to really think about their options.
2. Before The Treatment
The consent form is signed and the patient is greeted at the clinic on the day of the treatment. Before the patient is allowed into the treatment room, photographs of the area are taken. After getting comfortable, we inspect the treatment area and note any blood vessels, moles, or other problems. The skin is then cleaned with an anti-microbial product.
3. The Injections
Once you are satisfied and your skin is clean, the treatment can begin. The treatment consists of five injections on each side (in front of and along the side of your cheeks, below the lower lip, and at the angle of your jaw). There are 10 total injections. Each injection takes less that 5 seconds. If necessary, gauze is applied to the injection sites. Then the area is cleaned with an antimicrobial agent that also contains arnica for healing.
“To reduce discomfort, we use a few techniques. The patient can hold squeezy balls and the vibrating face tool is applied to the skin. It is clinically proven to reduce pain by distracting the patient from it.
4. After the Treatment
The patient should then refrain from touching the affected area or applying make-up for at most 12 hours. After that, they can resume normal activities. Aftercare should be avoided for 48 hours, including heavy exercise, alcohol and medications. This can increase bleeding risk.
5. Follow up treatment
The Profhilo treatment is divided into two parts. The second part takes place approximately one month after the first.
Does Profhilo hurt?
Numbing cream is an option, but many clinics do not recommend it. It can cause bruising to look worse. This means that ten injections are going to be a bit too smart.
Dr Taktouk says, “If you ask me, I would answer yes, it hurts.” The needle is small, but it’s the product that causes the stinging sensation. Each injection is quick and painless. We use distraction techniques to minimize discomfort so that the stinging sensation disappears quickly. The injection is not painful enough to discourage patients from returning for more treatments.
What is Profhilo’s average time to get to work?
We recommend at least two to three treatments per month. Dr Williams says that after this, your skin will look plumper and more youthful. Dr Taktouk also agrees. Many people notice a difference in their skin after just one week. However, the real results will not begin until 6-8 weeks after treatment. This is because the body takes time to produce collagen and elastin. That is when the true difference between what you see and what you get is amazing.
How long does Profhilo stay?
Dr Taktouk says that it is recommended to repeat the treatments every six months after the first two treatments. The results are usually lasting this long. “Some patients notice a dullening of their skin towards six months. Others love the treatment so much they return sooner than six months.
Who should and who shouldn’t get Profhilo
Dr Williams says that Profhilo(r), is great for moisturizing and helping to restore the skin’s natural elasticity when signs of ageing first appear. The result is natural-looking. For people with older skin conditions, it may require additional treatments to achieve the desired results. It is best to avoid cosmetic injectables for those under 25 who have plump, youthful skin that has not suffered any damage or signs of ageing.
It is also important to note that Profhilo should be avoided by pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Can Profhilo be used on all skin types and tones?
Dr Williams advises that this treatment is safe for all skin types and skin tones.

What can Profhilo not do?
It’s important to set realistic expectations when considering injectable treatments. You should also be able to determine what it won’t do as well as what it will.
Dr Taktouk says that Profhilo is not a filler. It can’t increase volume in specific areas or erase deeper lines. It cannot be used on the forehead, which is crucial for anyone who uses it to treat dry skin or wrinkles in the forehead.
What is the downtime following Profhilo’s death?
It’s normal to wonder about the downtime and whether you will need a mask for your return journey after ten facial injections.
Dr Williams explains that although there is no downtime, you may experience redness or small bumps after treatment. Sometimes, there may be some bruising.

Can Profhilo go wrong?
Injectables are not always easy to swallow so it is important to be aware of the potential risks. Dr Williams says that although there are risks to injections, Profhilo can be administered by qualified practitioners. Profhilo is very gentle and results are almost always natural.
