What is it that makes it so special? A northern mill town is my favorite. It is in my blood. My mother was born in one. Colne was built by a mustachioed mill owner. It had sturdy stone homes and all the modern cons that a new town would need in the 19th Century. It was a wise investment. 150 years later, the town has survived the loss of its cotton plants better than most. Although it hasn’t built a Todmorden Bridge or a Hebden Bridge yet, it is keeping its head above the water. The community diary is filled with people who live in the gardens. The lush green countryside at the ends of many streets lifts the heart.
Although the case against The mills has been dismissed, factory outlets and offices have replaced them. However, Banquo’s ghost hangs on to the glory of the past. It is not without socio-economic issues.
Are you well connected? Rail: The end of the line with an hourly slow service to Burnley (12 minutes), Blackburn (40mins) or Blackpool (95mins). Driving: 20 minutes to Skipton, Keighley, Bowland, or the Dales. Bradford takes 40 minutes. Preston and the M6 take half an hour. Manchester and Leeds take an hour.
Primary Schools: Foulridge St Michael And All Angels CofE and Sacred Heart RC, Christ Church CofE. Lord Street, Primet are all “good” according to Ofsted. Laneshaw Bridge is “outstanding”. Park High, Pendle Vale College, and Ss John Fisher & Thomas More Catholic College all have secondaries that are “good”.
